Print of Sugarloaf in Rio de Janeiro (1825)

When we seek the assistance of a language professional, our expectations are high. We may be dealing with an essential document or trying to maintain a consistent quality level in our production.

We may not have a native familiarity with the target language, or we need mostly a critical eye to do a thorough review and proofreading.

There are excellent reasons to contact a language professional. Get the most for your investment by hiring someone with experience and a genuine commitment to providing premium services. Here is a little about us.

Our Professional Experience

1980s - typewriter, record player, dial phone, analog camera

Our professional experience with languages started in 1985, a little before the digital age, with comprehensive training in the teaching method employed by Berlitz, the iconic language school. While hired primarily as language coaches in English and Portuguese, we also provided translation services at the Ipanema branch.

Before everyone had access to computers, people used typewriters. We still preserve our trustworthy electric Smith-Corona. A good collection of dictionaries and reference books was also essential, especially when dealing with technical terms.

Looking for different dictionaries at local and international bookshops was once like treasure hunting. From translation to rhyming, cursing, cooking, photographing, fashion, you name it.

When we started working at Winners, a language course in Ipanema created by former Berlitz directors and teachers, we created our D.O.T. (Department of Translations), working with Portuguese, English, Spanish, German, and French.

Another honorable task was instructing new teachers on the method. Teaching is one of the best ways of learning. Computers became more accessible. As designer and editor-in-chief of BrandNews, our bi-monthly newspaper in five languages, we learned new skills.

In the early 90s, we started subtitling for a prime Brazilian cable network. TV programs came in English, almost always without a transcript, and we typed the subtitles in Portuguese, formatting with an application they provided. Portuguese is a more verbose language than English, so designing subtitles with the proper number of characters was part of the handcraft.

world wide web

In 1995, when the Internet was still in its early steps, we took a sabbatical year while preparing to launch our first website in 1996. The guide to Rio de Janeiro made in Ipanema became an instant hit. It was one of the first places on the web to find fresh and reliable information about the city in English. Versions in German and Portuguese were also available.

When our visitors started requesting travel services such as hotel bookings and tours, we decided to open our inbound travel agency based in Ipanema. We provided services online to people worldwide for about two decades! Many hotels did not have a website back then, and we created the first online presence for countless venues.

This daily contact with international clients from all continents and the creation of content for our websites were invaluable reasons to stay current on a wide range of topics. Travel opportunities increased, and we visited many English-speaking countries on different continents.

Consecutive and Simultaneous Interpretation

We witnessed the birth of giants like Google and social networks, including Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and Linkedin. We learned in real time how to adapt our language to each of these platforms, creating quality content and engagement for our websites and clients.

In 2017, we faced a new challenge: conference interpretation. The course takes a whole year and combines the myriad capabilities of a language professional. Many of these techniques are helpful in everyday situations and have become part of our repertoire for the benefit of our clients.

We have never stopped offering language services to recommended clients. We always found a way, from streamlining a CV to subtitling full-length movies to creating content daily for premium websites. Our dedication and enthusiasm are the same, and we hope to share them with you.
